Zithromax is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Zithromax side effects:Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Zithromax: (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling). Seek medical treatment if you have a serious drug reaction that can affect many parts of your body. Symptoms may include: skin rash, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of your skin or eyes. This reaction may occur several weeks after you began using azithromycin. Call your doctor at once if you have:
Zithromax works by stopping the growth in your body of bacteria that are causing your infections. It does this by stopping the bacteria from producing the viruses or other proteins that are causing your infection. This helps to prevent the infection from spreading and from spreading to other people. Azithromycin can also treat other similar bacterial infections such as thrush or urinary tract infections. Zithromax is not a cure for these infections so it may be prescribed if you are at risk of getting several types of side effects.
Zithromax is not usually to be taken at the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription and consult your doctor for more information if you are taking any of the following drugs:
Amiodarone (may cause dizziness).Allergic reactions (rash, blistering, peeling) have been reported. If you get any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately: rashes, flushing, hives, itching, trouble breathing, rapid heartbeat, or weakness along with the welts of the skin. If your symptoms do not improve after a few days, or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Do not take any more than your prescribed dose. Azithromycin can cause a serious skin infection called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This is a very rare reaction to taking an antibiotic such as Zithromax. It is very serious and can be fatal. If you have a serious skin infection such as a Stevens-Johnson syndrome, stop taking Zithromax and contact your doctor immediately. Azithromycin can also be very dangerous to your heart. Azithromycin may cause a serious heart rhythm problem called tachycardia. Do not take any more heart rhythm problems than your doctor has prescribed.
